A August Ordinary Day
I woke to a baby nestled into me.
Nursing at the breast.
Restless.
Ready to greet the new day.
I look down at him, the same as every morning.
A smile.
Wide eyes.
The brightest smile I’ve ever seen.
And it was to me.
His mama.
And my heart couldn’t be more full with warmth.
Even after a restless night.
Like the night before.
And the night before that.
Actually, every night for the last seven months.
And probably before that, while the little one was tucked safely underneath my heart.
But I don’t mind, because you are mine.
And I am yours.
And there is warm coffee and cream waiting for me.
My favorite mug.
And plenty of future naps.
I steal a few quiet moments to listen to you babble before we leave the comfort of our bed.
The sweetest little voice.
Then we begin our journey down the stairs.
Stepping over sleeping dogs stretched along the hallway floor.
The house is still.
Dad long gone to work.
The siblings having a sleepover down the road with cousins.
The oldest son showed up, got dressed and ready to work with dad.
I finished my coffee and dressed the little one.
Buckled him into his car seat and away we went to drop brother off.
A quick good morning kiss to daddy.
And a farewell to brother.
We drove back home.
Where I filled the window bird feeder that was barren.
And I made some eggs for the little one and myself.
I had left over muffins the middle son and I baked the day before.
And yogurt, which of course had to be shared.
The little one isn’t convinced yet that real food is better than mama’s milk. (Except peas- he love peas, which is daddy’s absolute number one disliked food on this planet 😂)
A few bites here.
A nibble there.
A smile that shows off two tiny white teeth, one just poking through the surface.
The culprit, I’m sure, of being sleepy, clingy and cranky a day ago.
And all the drool.
Then I will sit down to work a little from home (yes I still try to work). It’s not easy with a busy little one. To be honest, it wasn’t easy with a newborn either. But luckily my husband is understanding and the workload is small these days. I’m just happy I can help.
Then when everyone is home and dressed, we will adventure out- the oldest, the middle son and the baby and I.
The sky is painted in soft gray -the sun playing peek a boo behind the clouds. So we have decided on a lighthouse museum tour. I have no clue why we have never been before!
So there we have an ordinary August day…..
Coffee.
Crumbs on the highchair.
Birds at the feeder.
Sleepy dogs.
Tiny teeth.
Quick kisses goodbye.
The sound of your little voice filling the quiet house.
Nothing extraordinary.
Yet somehow…
It’s everything.
